Stand Still and Trust

Study Guide: Exodus 14:13–14 (NIV)

“Moses answered the people, ‘Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.’”

Theme: “Stand Still and Trust”

This passage is about faith in motionless moments. When you feel trapped, overwhelmed, or powerless, God reminds you: you don’t have to do the fighting. You just have to stand still in trust.

Opening Reflection: When You Feel Trapped

There are moments in life when it feels like you’ve run out of options. You’re standing still, but not by choice—boxed in by fear, pressure, and uncertainty. You wonder, “How did I end up here? And how do I move forward?”

Exodus 14:13–14 reminds us that sometimes, the most powerful thing we can do is not move at all—but stand firm in faith. When your back is against the wall (or the sea), God’s response isn’t panic or retreat. It’s presence. It’s power. It’s a whisper that says, “You don’t have to fight this. I’ve got you.”

This is not about passivity—it’s about deep surrender. A calm trust that, even when you don’t see the way, God is already making one.

Context of the Passage

  • The Israelites had just left Egypt, but Pharaoh changed his mind and chased after them.

  • They were trapped between the Red Sea and their enemies.

  • Panic broke out. But Moses speaks courage and faith into the people’s fear.

Key Insights

“Do not be afraid.” - Fear clouds faith. God's first command is to calm your heart.

“Stand firm…” - You don’t have to run or strive—just stay grounded in faith.

“…you will see the deliverance…” - God wants you to witness His power, not just hear about it.

“You will never see them again.” - Your oppressor, fear, or past won’t follow you into your freedom.

“The Lord will fight for you…” - You’re not alone in your battles—God takes them personally.

“…you need only to be still.” - This is spiritual stillness—calm, surrendered, expectant.

Reflection Questions

  1. What situation in your life feels like you’re “trapped between Pharaoh and the sea”?

  2. What does “being still” look like for you right now—mentally, emotionally, spiritually?

  3. Is there something you’re trying to control that God is asking you to release?

Prayer

Lord, when everything in me wants to run, panic, or fight—help me to stand still. I trust You to fight for me. Teach me to let go and lean on Your strength. Show me the deliverance You’ve already prepared. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

📝 Journal Prompt:

“Where in my life am I being called to stop striving and start trusting?”

Reflect on a current situation where you feel stuck, anxious, or tempted to force your way forward.

  • What emotions are rising in you?

  • How might your life shift if you truly believed God was fighting for you?

  • What might God be doing behind the scenes that you can’t yet see?

Take your time. Let your heart speak honestly. Then invite God into the silence.
