The Heart to Serve
Scripture Focus: Acts 6:1–7
Theme: Servant Leadership vs. Spiritual Prioritizing — What Would Jesus Do?
🔹 Opening Reflection:
Have you ever felt overlooked when your needs weren’t “spiritual enough” for someone in leadership? In Acts 6:2, the apostles say, “It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables.” At first glance, this may seem like wise delegation — and perhaps it was. But let’s pause and ask: Was this the heart of Christ?
Jesus, the Son of God, bent low to wash feet. He fed thousands. He stopped mid-sermon to tend to the one. So how do we, as leaders and as believers, walk in the tension between calling and compassion?
This study explores the balance between honoring our spiritual priorities and serving with humility — reflecting the true heart of Jesus in all we do.
🔹 Key Scripture:
“It is not desirable that we should leave the word of God and serve tables.” — Acts 6:2 (NKJV)
🔹 Key Points:
➥ Delegation vs. Dismissal:
Delegating isn’t inherently a problem — but dismissing a need as “beneath us” contradicts the example of Jesus.
➥ Christ the Servant:
John 13:1–17: Jesus washed His disciples’ feet.
Mark 10:45: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve…”
➥ The Value of the Overlooked:
The widows in Acts 6 were being neglected — they mattered to God.
The solution demanded Spirit-filled, compassionate service, not a cold view of roles.
➥ Check the Tone of Ministry:
Are we serving from a place of love or superiority?
Doing the “right” things with the “wrong” heart matters to God.
📝 Journal Prompts:
➥ Have I ever dismissed a need because it felt “too small” or “not my job”?
➥ In what ways can I practice humility like Christ today?
➥ How can I honor both my spiritual calling and the needs of the people around me?
➥ What does it really mean to “serve tables” in my life right now?
🔹 Prayer:
Lord Jesus,
Teach me to lead like You. Help me to never view service as beneath me. When I’m tempted to overlook needs in favor of higher callings, remind me that You, King of Kings, bent low to serve. Fill me with Your heart — one that values every person and every need. Give me wisdom to walk in my calling with both boldness and humility.
Amen.
🔹 Closing Thought:
Jesus never had to choose between preaching and serving — He carried the heart to do both. Let us do the same.
